Our new on-line shop has nearly 40 items ranging from paintings and mixed-media works of art by Millie Donovan and Kate Cascio to wall-hangings and decorative pillows fashioned by Solveig Ronnqvist of FACE (Fiber Artists on the Cutting Edge). Both shows are currently on display through the end of the month but their work will be on TheRiversideGallery.etsy.com for the next few months. So stop by The Riverside Gallery on-line and promote the arts by doing a little shopping.

In Bloom...Celebrating Spring

Currently Showing at:

The Emporium Gallery

15 Water Street, Mystic, C.T.

March 5th-30th

A Feast for the Eyes

Collaborative Show by F.A.C.E.

Currently Showing at:

The Riverside Artists Studio & Gallery

12 Broad Street, Westerly, R.I.

March 4th-March 27th

The Riverside Gallery on Etsy.com

http://TheRiversideGallery.etsy.com

Also on Etsy.com:

Newbury Art Watercolors by Ian Newbury

http://newburyart.etsy.com

Be sure to make us a favorite.

A Feast for your Eyes...March 4th, 5-8pm

FACE, Fiber Artists on the Cutting Edge, will exhibit at The Riverside Artists Studio & Gallery March 4 – March 26. People young and old added to the strings of colorful cranes that will eventually hang in Wilcox Park in Westerly. The goal was to complete 25 strings of 40 cranes totaling 1,000. According to Japanese legend, anyone folding 1, 000 cranes will be granted a wish. Be sure to check back and see where the cranes are hanging and maybe you can stop by and add one of your own.

Excerpt taken from Ian Newbury's post on www.newburystudio.com

The Thousand Origami Cranes is well known as an international symbol of world peace through the story of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who contracted leukemia as a result of radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II. Her story is told in the book "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes." Several temples, including some in Tokyo and Hiroshima, have eternal flames for World Peace. At these temples, school groups or individuals often donate Senbazuru to add to the prayer for peace. The cranes are left exposed to the elements, slowly dissolving and becoming tattered as the wish is released. In this way they are related to the prayer flags of India and Tibet.

An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. The crane in Japan is one of the mystical or holy beasts (others include the dragon and tortoise), and is said to live for a thousand years.

Holiday Fun at The Riverside!

Here are some photographs of our Holiday Stroll Night. The "No More, No Less" Holiday Show will be on display until the end of the month, so stop by and take advantage of some great Holiday gift ideas! Even as we all lead lives full of obligations to family, work, and community we are all committed to bringing thought and clarity to our artwork through discussion and promotion. Encouraging our fellow studio mates to explore and create has been one of the qualities that we most cherish in each other. In keeping with this mission, the artists at The Riverside are going to be encouraging our patrons and fellow artists to participate in upcoming events hosted by us which include evening workshops, lectures, and critiques. We hope to bring to the gallery visiting artists and we will be working to create work priced just right for the holiday season. Be sure to stop by during October's Open Studio Night. We look forward to meeting you as we show off our best work. Open Studio Night is Wednesday, Oct. 1st from 5-8pm. The artists at The Riverside have been very busy collecting images and ramping up for the new work that we hope to create through the fall and winter months. So in celebration of the coming season our resident watercolorist and landscape artist, Ian Newbury, has been preparing to be the Featured Artist of the Month for September. Ian's images will allow us to remember the warmth and sun of summers on the beach. His works will remind us of the times spent along the shore in quaint little towns such as the Stonington Borough in Connecticut, Weekapaug in Rhode Island and the shoreline. The beginning of the day was glorious with sunshine and a cool breeze but impending storm clouds threatened to displace all activities for the Community Center's annual event. Around 12:30 vendors started to pack up their wears as thunder could be heard at a distance. Despite the weather, Ian and his family decided to stay on and were still there at around 2:30 as the rain started to come down. Good for him! It seemed like the artists, especially Ian, were well received. Business transactions were made and many people left happy with art in tow. Although not as brave as our dear Ian (Millie left right before the storm) both artists were happy to see new faces and many friends today. Special thanks to Barbara Plummer and Marie Laudini for taking the time to stop by and see their "studio-mates".

Featured in August
